Barbaresco PIO CESARE 2017
PIO CESARE – HISTORY
The Pio Cesare winery boasts, with its glorious and century-old history, important distinctions that make it one of the most celebrated and important producers in the Langhe.
It was founded in Alba in 1881 by entrepreneur Cesare Pio, a great wine enthusiast and pioneer of values such as quality and stylistic originality. By the early 20th century, his brand was already known throughout Europe, becoming a benchmark for Piedmontese wine worldwide. A reputation and prestige on national and international markets that continued first under the guidance of Rosy Pio and her husband Giuseppe Boffa and, today, under that of their son Pio Boffa. Currently exporting to over 50 countries, it is one of the most famous and important Italian wineries, known as much by the general public as by enthusiasts.
The vineyard heritage extends over a total of 70 hectares among the hills of Barolo and Barbaresco and boasts particularly gifted plots, such as the Bricco di Treiso and Ornato vineyards in Serralunga d’Alba, along with many important crus. Each of these vineyards is included in the list of Additional Geographical Mentions of the Barolo and Barbaresco regulations.
PIO CESARE The winery and production
The winery, located in the historic center of Alba, is spread over 4 floors below the level of the Tanaro river and, in addition to representing the ideal environment for production, aging, and preservation, is also an important piece of history. It was in fact excavated and built in the 18th century and is bordered by the ancient Roman walls of Alba Pompeia. In this highly evocative historical context, the wines are produced according to the classic and traditional practice of blending the characteristics of the vineyards, rather than vinifying separately by cru. This was how it was done in the 19th century and this has remained the family’s production method.
Fidelity to a classic style, consistent quality, and great care in the vineyard and cellar characterize the entire production. Pio Cesare wines are an important historical witness and an example of quality and prestige that still sets the standard today. They represent the history and tradition of the Langhe, but also their future and success in Italy and the world.

In casks for approximately 30 months and a small portion in barriques.
Notes
A very classic style Barbaresco: elegance and finesse, ripe and spicy fruit, blend with tannins that are present but not overpowering. Good structure and concentration. Long-lived.
Barbaresco is a great wine in itself and should not be diminished with the term “basic” or “generic” just because no vineyard or sub-zone is indicated on the label.
- Color: Ruby red with garnet reflections
- Aroma: Elegant and delicate, with notes of violets, preserved berries, sweet spices and noble woods
- Taste: Rich, fresh, vibrant and elegant, with lively tannins and long balsamic persistence
