The Tradition

My grandfather Nazzareno, when washing his face, was careful not to swallow even a drop of water; in fact, since he was a boy, the only liquid he ever drank was wine, only wine, peasant wine that he made himself, in times without professional oenologists.
My other grandfather Giuseppe also made his own wine, and my father Gaspare was no different. Could I have broken the tradition? Never!

This is how Valter Mattoni responds to those who ask why he spends so much time locked in his cellar, captive to his small and passionate production.

The Story

“In 2000, Arshura was born, a magical word that evokes an ancestral thirst, like the passion of Valter’s family.
Arshura is made from pure Montepulciano grapes in one of the most wine-dedicated areas of all the Marche, in the heart of Italy, on the gentle hills of the Ascoli area, three hundred meters above sea level that can be glimpsed on the horizon, in clay and alluvial soils.

Valter was born in 1960 in Castorano. His nickname is Roccia and his profession is decorator. It is well known that Roccia is also captive to other passions such as old things and motorcycles, but we especially appreciate him for his four thousand bottles of Arshura. Clearly.”

The estate Valter Mattoni has been included in the Quattrocalici Wine Guide because it is one of the most important wine-producing realities in the province of Ascoli Piceno.
