Brunello di Montalcino 2015
Tenuta Poggio di Sotto
Brunello di Montalcino – Tenuta Poggio di Sotto
Fattoria Poggio di Sotto was established in 1989 on the south-eastern slope of the Montalcino hill, an area long considered among the finest for Sangiovese production.
The estate extends over 44 hectares, of which 16 are planted with vineyards, all registered in the Brunello di Montalcino Register, with the remainder dedicated to olive groves (1,400 trees) and woodland.
The vineyards stretch across a slope that gradually rises from 200 m to 400 m.
Protected by Monte Amiata on one side and open to sea breezes on the other, caressed by the banks of the Orcia river, the property enjoys a unique microclimate benefiting from significant temperature variations even in midsummer.
The steep hillside terrain, with average gradients of 10%, is entirely trained using the spur-pruned cordon system with yields of 30-35 quintals per hectare due to extremely rigorous grape selection.
During the ripening phase, only the finest bunches are left on the vine. Further selection in the vineyard takes place at the moment of harvest itself.
The estate follows organic farming criteria, guaranteed and certified by ICEA.
Brunello di Montalcino
Poggio di Sotto is one of the great names of Brunello di Montalcino. It is history and tradition, classicism and unmistakable style. This is one of the most elegant expressions of Sangiovese, the native Tuscan grape variety that has become known worldwide for its fascinating and noble character. It originates in the Castelnuovo dell’Abate area, in the province of Siena, from vineyards situated at altitudes ranging from 200 to 450 metres above sea level. Poggio di Sotto’s Brunello captures all the eloquent expressiveness of local Sangiovese and also great naturalness, underscored by the choice of production methods that faithfully follow tradition.
Poggio di Sotto’s Brunello di Montalcino is the purest and clearest expression of Sangiovese. The grapes are selected with extreme and rigorous care and transported to the cellar, where vinification takes place in wooden vats. The maceration phase with the skins is very long, as per tradition, and fermentation begins spontaneously. Ageing lasts approximately 40 months in large oak casks and is followed by a further maturation period in bottle of at least 8 months.
So varied and complex that it requires all the time necessary to discover this oenological treasure. Initially you will discover notes of wild herbs, cedarwood, raisins, ginger and mint. Gradually, notes of plum, tobacco and chocolate emerge. Refined style with silky tannins. Despite its aromatic richness, it is fresh and delicate.
For optimal enjoyment, we recommend decanting the wine at least 1-2 hours before serving. A wine of great longevity, already remarkable if enjoyed now.
