ROAGNA Montefico Vecchie Viti Barbaresco 2015

ROAGNA Montefico Vecchie Viti Barbaresco 2015

THE ROAGNA WINERY

The winery originated in Barbaresco. Since the second half of the 1800s, four generations of the family have worked in the cellar. Several awards won by the great-grandfather date back to the early 1900s.

In the History of Don Michele Del Pero, Archpriest of Barbaresco from 1889 to 1935, two gold medals are mentioned: one obtained at the Exhibition of the Principality of Monaco and the other at the Last Chicago Exhibition.

In February 1952, the family decided to purchase and rebuild the prestigious I Paglieri (Pajè) farmhouse in Barbaresco. Subsequently, in 1978, the corporate brand was created, the winery’s current logo.

In 1982, the inspiration of the new father gave rise to Opera Prima. In 1989, the company purchased the historic La Pira farmhouse in the Rocche of Castiglione Falletto: Alfredo’s dream was, in fact, to own one of the most important “crus” in the Barolo area. Since 2001, after finishing his studies at the Enological School of Alba, Luca joined the company.

BARBARESCO MONTEFICO VECCHIE VITI

The name Montefico derives from the Piedmontese dialect (mont der fi), which was historically used to name the vineyard plots at the time, and it is one of the historic vineyards of the village of Barbaresco.

Located northwest of the town’s vineyard area, Montefico has calcareous marl soils with a high content of active limestone.

The plants for this wine are at least 50 years old, hence old vines, exclusively of massal origin with wood obtained from pruning the same vineyard.
Harvesting takes place in October, usually in one morning, at perfect physiological ripeness.

Harvesting is manual, in small crates.
Before vinification, the grapes undergo 2 manual selections to ensure the perfect integrity of the fruit.

Fermentation takes place exclusively in wooden vats using a pied de cuve of indigenous yeasts and lasts for about ten days. Subsequently, the ancient submerged cap maceration technique is applied, which continues for at least 2 and a half months (70-90 days).

The wine then matures in a neutral oak barrel for approximately 5 years.
Bottle production is extremely limited, around a thousand per vintage.
The total number of bottles produced can be found on the label.

  • Palate: powerful, muscular, of immense vigor. Spirited tannins and incredible depth provide an engaging and exhilarating sip.
  • Pairings: perfect with braised red meats, game, and savory meat dishes.
