PRODUTTORI DEL BARBARESCO Barbaresco Riserva Montefico 2019

THE WINERY PRODUTTORI DEL BARBARESCO

Founded in 1958, it now has 50 members with approximately 110 hectares of Nebbiolo vineyards (1/7 of the original area) and controls many of the region’s historic “crus.” Produttori del Barbaresco vinifies only Nebbiolo grapes, producing a Barbaresco D.O.C.G. from various vineyards within the appellation, and a Langhe Nebbiolo D.O.C. using grapes from the same vineyards deemed less suitable for aging, resulting in a simpler, ready-to-drink wine.

In great vintages, 9 Barbarescos from specific vineyards are produced and marketed as Barbaresco Riserva: Asili, Rabajà, Rio Sordo, Ovello, Montestefano, Pajé, Muncagota, Montefico, Pora, areas long renowned for producing grapes of exceptional quality. Since the 2007 vintage, they have been officially recognized by the production regulations as “Additional Geographic Mentions.” The name of the Cru and the vineyard owners are shown on the numbered labels.

BARBARESCO Montefico

Vineyard: Montefico

PRODUTTORI DEL BARBARESCO Barbaresco Riserva Montefico 2019. The Barbaresco Riserva “Montefico” from the Produttori del Barbaresco winery is an elegant, intense, and structured red wine produced on the magnificent hills of Barbaresco, Piedmont. This label is made from 100% Nebbiolo grapes from the Montefico cru, a single vineyard located on a west/southwest-facing hill at an altitude of approximately 250 m.

The Montefico cru is particularly appealing after some aging, when the wine still retains a fresh and fruity palate.

2019 VINTAGE

The growing season started slowly as winter lingered until February, delaying spring and bringing rain and low temperatures until mid-March. Nevertheless, budburst was regular: heavy April rains caused a slow start but provided significant soil water reserves, compensating for the dry winter. Unsettled weather with moderate temperatures continued through May, confirming a delay of about two weeks compared to recent years, though in line with more traditional cycles.

Temperatures

High temperatures in June, combined with soil water availability, created conditions for rapid vegetative growth, requiring careful management to prevent pest and disease issues. The hottest period occurred between late June and early July, followed by milder temperatures and occasional rain. A second heatwave at the end of July ended with intense but harmless thunderstorms; the rest of the summer enjoyed a mild climate with regular, sporadic rainfall.

The harvest

September saw fluctuating but positive conditions for Nebbiolo ripening. A cold, grey first week was followed by a perfect second week with clear skies and significant diurnal temperature shifts. The third week was warmer, while late September and early October were ideal, featuring warm days and cool nights.
