ODDERO Barolo 2019

PODERI E CANTINE ODDERO

Like a natural terrace overlooking the Piedmontese hills of the Langhe, the Poderi e Cantine Oddero estate has always vinified exclusively its own estate-grown grapes.
The Oddero family has owned these vineyards and farmhouses since before 1700. Today, it stands as a historic brand among Barolo producers.

After generations in male hands, the winery is currently owned and managed by Mariacristina and Mariavittoria, daughters of Giacomo Oddero—a renowned figure in the Langa region and beyond. Here, ancient wisdom blends with modern techniques, while every production step is followed with patience and tenacity.

The estate comprises 35 hectares of vineyards, over 16 of which are planted with Nebbiolo for Barolo. These yield grapes for some of the finest wines in the Langa, born from over two centuries of history: an example of how to treasure the past to build the present and lay the foundations for the future, through respect for tradition and extreme care for the vineyards and wines.

BAROLO ODDERO

VINEYARD – BRICCO CHIESA

Municipality of La Morra, Santa Maria hamlet – 2.56 Ha – Barolo Geographical Mention

Bricco Chiesa is the historic production core of our estate, “the home vineyard,” so to speak. At the foot of the church of Santa Maria della Neve, which in 1400 was referred to as Sancta Maria de Marcenasco, it is a beautiful sequence of regular rows, facing due south, from 210 to 290 m above sea level. The soil has a prevalence of fine clays, with sand and calcium carbonate.
Here, digging by hand to build a well, at 9 meters depth, in the upper part where the road to La Morra runs today, in 1928 a perfectly preserved fish skeleton from the Tortonian Miocene emerged, now on display in our cellar, by kind loan from the F. Eusebio Museum of Alba.

Vinification

Rigorous manual selection of grapes in the vineyard. Fermentation and maceration in stainless steel for 20 days at a controlled temperature of 28-29°C occur separately for the three vineyards, as does malolactic fermentation.

Aging

Separate aging of Barolo from the different vineyards in Austrian and Slavonian oak barrels of 40-60 and 75 Hl, for a duration of 30 months. Blending in spring, bottling at the end of summer, further aging in bottle for a period of six months before release.

Tasting notes

  • Color brilliant garnet red, with warmer reflections over time.
  • Bouquet unmistakable, highly pleasant, intense and ethereal, very persistent, sometimes spicy, with hints of truffle, licorice, dried flowers.
  • Palate dry, with important and full tannins.
