Giacomo Conterno Winery

The winery was founded in 1900 in Monforte d’Alba by Giacomo, a descendant of a family of winemakers active since the 19th century. His son Giovanni was the first to bottle Barolo Monfortino in 1912, masterfully crafted from select local grapes. At the time, the wine, sold in barrels or demijohns, was rarely found in bottles.

In 1934, Giacomo produced Barolo Monfortino, named after his ancestral home in Monforte. In 1974, he purchased fourteen hectares of land in Serralunga d’Alba. From the very beginning, these proved particularly suited to growing Nebbiolo and Barbera grapes. From that point on, Giacomo Conterno no longer purchased grapes from local growers. Instead, it dedicated itself exclusively to cultivating its own vineyards. Here, the vineyard is cultivated using traditional methods: careful pruning, removal of excess bunches, defoliation to allow sunlight and air to reach the grapes, and harvesting at the optimal time. In short, these simple, ancient techniques are essential for producing exceptional wines.

The wine born from this exceptional soil requires no forcing. In fact, it’s enough to maximize what nature has provided. This is the philosophy of the Giacomo Conterno Winery, which is undoubtedly an ambassador of Italian excellence around the world.
