DOMAINE STEPHANE MAGNIEN

Founded in 1897, the estate, in its current form, is the culmination of four generations of winegrowers.

Born to restaurateur parents, the great-grandfather, Victor Magnien, developed a passion for his grandmother’s profession as a winegrower in Morey-Saint-Denis. He learned the trade at another estate in the village, before marrying.

Together with his wife, he built an estate that included both regional appellation and Grand Cru vineyards. This period also coincided with the painful era of various wars.

Félix, the only son, inherited the vineyards with his wife. Winemaking took place in the family cellar, but all the wine was sold to négociants.

It was then that the horse-drawn tractor made its appearance, replacing the horse, and the horizontal press took the place of the vertical ratchet press… but the cellars were still empty.

Grandson Jean-Paul and his wife Marie-Odile began bottling and selling their wines, maintaining the traditional respect for appellations of origin, from vineyard to bottle.

This required significant investment: a renewable stock of barrels, storage tanks, bottling equipment, and the creation of a solid customer base!

To further develop the estate, Stéphane (the fourth generation) joined the business in 2002. While continuing to work in his father’s spirit, he brings his technical expertise and constant desire to ensure his wines express the estate’s terroir to its fullest.

An ideally positioned village

Located at a certain distance from its famous neighbors, Morey-Saint-Denis has an ideal position that combines the finesse of Chambolle-Musigny with the power of Gevrey-Chambertin.

This commune is located in the central part of the Côte de Nuits, in the area most suited to producing Grand Cru wines. The very compact vineyards surrounding the village demonstrate how the terraced terrain (with altitudes varying from 250 to 360 meters) has played a significant role in the classification of wines.

Finally, the village AOC wine is produced on both sides of the Premier Cru vineyards.

BOURGOGNE ALIGOTE “Au Gué” 2023

The Bourgogne Aligoté “Au Gué” vineyard is located at the foot of the village of Morey-Saint-Denis, on deep clay soils, in the locality known as ‘Au Gué’. The plot was planted in 1990.

Exclusive to Burgundy, Aligoté is the second white grape variety cultivated in Burgundy after Chardonnay. It represents 5% of the Burgundian vineyard and has found a qualitative dimension in the clay, marl, and granite soils of the southern areas of Burgundy.

The Aligoté grape variety, which gives this wine its name, is known to be more resistant and productive than Chardonnay. It produces a fresh, fruity, slightly tart wine, with notes of green apple and white peach.

The grapes are hand-harvested, selected in the vineyard, pressed quickly and then cold-pressed to ensure proper settling, inoculated with yeasts and fermented at controlled temperature (18°C). The wine is aged in stainless steel tanks for 6-7 months, filtered and bottled.

Annual production is 2,500 bottles, bottled at the estate.

Domaine Magnien produces a Bourgogne Aligoté of pale yellow color with silvery reflections.

On the nose, mineral notes are perceived, accompanied by aromas of yellow fruit and citrus. On the palate it is fresh, taut and smooth. A delicious and pleasant wine to drink, to be enjoyed fresh in its youth.

Very pleasant as an aperitif but also as an accompaniment to seafood or shellfish. It is a wine to drink young, within 3 or 4 years of the vintage.

Serve between 9 and 12°C.
