CASTELLO DEI RAMPOLLA Sammarco 2007
THE CASTELLO DEI RAMPOLLA ESTATE
A particularly well-suited area in Tuscany is south of the town of Panzano in Chianti, known as the “Conca d’Oro”. Here, in Santa Lucia in Faulle, lies the Castello dei Rampolla estate.
The land where the winery stands has been owned by the Rampolla family since 1739. However, it was only in the mid-1960s, thanks to Alceo di Napoli Rampolla, that the estate’s winemaking dream came to life. A determined man with a great spirit, he inherited the company from his father and, together with his wife, planted the first vineyards in 1968. These produced the first bottle of Chianti Classico with the 1975 harvest.
At that time, however, this type of wine struggled to establish itself. So Alceo, with the help of the great enologist Giacomo Tachis, decided to plant Cabernet Sauvignon, a variety that began to bring great satisfaction to the estate. Since then, Castello dei Rampolla began its path to success. This also involved pioneering choices, such as adopting biodynamic protocols in 1994 and using terracotta amphorae for aging in 2008.
Today, approximately 70,000 bottles are produced across six labels. Notable among them, alongside an excellent Chianti Classico DOCG, are “Sammarco” and “D’Alceo”—IGTs dominated by the personality and structure of Cabernet Sauvignon.
The grapes are vinified in concrete. They are then aged first for 12-15 months in tonneaux and barrels, and then directly in the bottle for a further 18-24 months.
SAMMARCO
An elegant and refined wine. Percentages of Sangiovese and Merlot are added to the Cabernet Sauvignon.
Production varies according to weather conditions: 8,000 – 25,000 bottles.
Vinification and aging
3 months in concrete vats; 12-15 months in tonneaux/barriques and 12 hl barrels
no toast / medium toast; 18-24 months in bottle
Tasting notes
Sammarco is a wine with fresh, fine aromas of undergrowth and a deep, intense color.
It features aromas specific to the terroir and impressions of ripe fruit. It has great concentration and robust tannins.
