Cantina Terlano Nova Domus Riserva 2023
History
- The foundation of the Cantina Terlano in 1893
Apart from a few innovative winegrowers, however, who looked to the Rheingau region for new ideas and brought grape varieties from Germany and France to South Tyrol
- The landlords were also the dominant factor in winemaking in the region.
In order to liberate themselves from this domination, 24 Terlano winegrowers decided to join forces and founded the Cantina Terlano.
Whereas red wines were more common in South Tyrol at the end of the 19th century, with a red to white ratio of 80:20, Terlano was already well known as a white wine area in 1893.
Over the years this focus on white wines has been consolidated, and today the ratio of whites to reds at the Cantina Terlano is 70 percent white to 30 percent red.
The south-facing slopes of Monzoccolo in the Terlano DOC area are the location of steep and sunny vineyards at altitudes between 450 and 950 meters above sea-level, where a very exciting Pinot Bianco flourishes.
This rich and highly complex wine is impressive for its minerality and considerable capacity for development and thus underscores the full potential of this grape variety.
“The ruined castle towering over the entrance to the village and dating back to 1206 is a majestic sight. Equally powerful and complex is our noble cuvée of Pinot Bianco, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc. This distinct Terlano cuvée embodies all the strengths of the region in a full-bodied multifaceted mineral wine that takes years of aging in the bottle to achieve its full potential.”

Vintage 2023
A mild winter with little snow was followed by a very dry and mild spring. Fortunately, this was followed by a cool and rainy May, so that the urgently needed water reserves could be replenished. The flowering of the vines was slightly delayed by cool temperatures in April and May.
In the warm summer months of June and July there was sufficient precipitation, which led to a slight increase in fungal pressure with peronospora and oidium. However, major losses in yield were avoided thanks to our long years of experience and professional handling. A hot spell in August briefly slowed the ripening of the grapes. Following abundant rainfall at the end of August, the weather remained stable in late summer and was very fine in the fall. The result was a good harvest, which began with the Sauvignon Blanc on September 4.
The 2023 vintage offers fresh, fruity wines with slightly lower levels of alcohol and can be classified as a good to very good vintage.
Wine Character:
- Color: fresh light yellow with slightly greenish nuances
- Smell: This cuvée has a multifaceted structure with a hint of herbs and spices, including aniseed, mint and sage, as well as nuances of fruit aromas, especially apricot, mandarine, honeydew melon, maracuja and passion fruit, all underpinned with salty mineral components.
- Taste: On the palate, Nova Domus is complex and delicate, offering a creamy softness in an interesting symbiosis with an aromatic minerality, and has the texture for a very long finish.
