CANALICCHIO DI SOPRA Brunello di Montalcino 2016
The Estate
The beating heart of Canalicchio di Sopra today comprises 60 hectares of land on the northeastern slope of the Montalcino hill. Of these, 19 are cultivated as vineyards, within a context rich in biodiversity, scenic beauty, and UNESCO heritage since 2004.
Since 1962, this estate has been an active part of Montalcino’s qualitative development. The first bottle of Brunello di Montalcino “Canalicchio di Sopra” was produced in 1966. Already in 1967, Canalicchio di Sopra was one of the 12 founding brands of the Consorzio del Vino Brunello di Montalcino.
Canalicchio di Sopra is today the result of three generations of passionate winegrowers, inextricably linked to Montalcino and its land.
Primo Pacenti, intuitive, courageous, and enterprising, founded the estate in 1962. From 1987, he was joined by his son-in-law Pier Luigi Ripaccioli, who dedicated himself to the tenacious pursuit of quality and meticulous work in the vineyard. Since 2001, his grandchildren Francesco, Marco, and Simonetta have carried forward a respectful approach combining tradition and innovation, love and respect for the territory they rely upon to produce classic wines.
Cru Canalicchio
The vineyards extend over 19 ha within the “Canalicchio” and “Montosoli” crus; different soils, different exposures, different microclimates: this makes each vineyard unique.
The wine
Produced from vineyards over 10 years old, it represents the essence of our terroir concept; indeed, it is an expression of elegance, depth, and freshness of our Sangiovese. Moreover, it is capable of combining the balsamic character of Montalcino’s northern slope with the opulence of our soils.
- Grape variety: 100% Sangiovese
The Brunello di Montalcino “Canalicchio di Sopra” vintage is the result of a blend of two different soils: soil with a pronounced clay component, very rich in intermediate elements such as magnesium, iron, and manganese, characteristic of Cru Canalicchio, and galestro soil situated at high elevation with a very high mineral component, loam-clay texture with high silt content, characteristic of Cru Montosoli.
The blend produces wines of great minerality and sapidity, supported by excellent acidity ideal for long aging.
