BRAIDA Bricco dell’Uccellone Barbera d’Asti 2017

…THE STORY…

The story of Braida is linked to that of Rocchetta Tanaro, a small town in the Monferrato region of Asti.

“My village is no surprise, ten vineyards, six houses, one church”: these are the words of chansonnier Paolo Frola, who is also the local doctor of Rocchetta. The song was written with Gianni Mura, drinking the Barbera of Rocchetta. Of those ten vineyards sung by Frola, some are Braida. They belonged to grandfather Giuseppe, then passed to father Giacomo, and now Giuseppe and Raffaella Bologna cultivate them. The estate was born from the enthusiasm, passion and entrepreneurial courage of a Rocchetta native “Doc”, Giacomo Bologna.

“Braida” was the nickname that Giacomo’s father, Giuseppe Bologna, a carter by profession, had earned playing pallone elastico, due to his resemblance to a champion of this sport. From his father Giacomo inherited, along with the nickname, a love for sports and horses and an extensive Barbera vineyard on the hills of Rocchetta.

…BRAIDA IS…

Braida is Raffaella’s infectious laughter and Giuseppe’s absorbed gaze. Two siblings who carry in their genes and gestures the heritage of an exceptional Italian wine family. A heritage that through daily work they consolidate and expand, sharing its finest fruits with their wonderful team of collaborators, with their essential hometown, Rocchetta Tanaro, and with all those who love their wines.
Braida is the “forest of thoughts”, up there in Montebruna, and the young vines aligned and ready to give life to a new Barbera vineyard at Asinara. Biodiversity and production rigor, genius, imagination and respect for tradition.
Braida is the story of Barbera – from its lightest and most carefree expression to its deepest and most sensual – and the unprecedented adventure of white wines from Langa among Nascetta, Chardonnay, Riesling.
Braida is Giacomo Bologna’s dream that Raffaella and Giuseppe, through work and dedication, have made into a solid, joyful and beloved reality.

BARBERA D’ASTI BRICCO DELL’UCCELLONE

L’Uccellone was the nickname of a woman who lived on the vineyard hillside. Her nose resembled a bird’s beak, and she always dressed in black, earning her the nickname in the village. This inspired the name Bricco dell’Uccellone.

Grape and Vineyard

Made with 100% Barbera grapes from estate vineyards in Rocchetta Tanaro.

In the Cellar

Maceration on the skins takes place at a controlled temperature for 20 days. The wine is then aged in oak barrels for 12 months, followed by another year in the bottle.

Tasting Notes

  • Color: very intense ruby red with garnet highlights.
  • Bouquet: rich and complex, with remarkable concentration and depth; notes of red fruit and berries stand out, with underlying hints of minty spices, vanilla, and liquorice.
  • Palate: generous, full-bodied, and remarkably structured; a perfect blend of varietal character and oak influence, resulting in great smoothness, elegance, and a very long aromatic finish.
  • Pairs with fine meat dishes, roasts, even with sauces, and aged cheeses.
