Sassicaia 1999

Terroir

Sassicaia is an extraordinary wine produced within the Tenuta San Guido estate in Bolgheri.
The latter is a hamlet in the municipality of Castagneto Carducci, located a few kilometers northwest of the main town. It sits in the heart of the Maremma Livornese, on the final slopes of the Colline Metallifere.

Bolgheri is famous not only for its historical and scenic characteristics but also for the red wines produced in the area. Thanks to the unique soil composition and the sunny, dry, and moderately ventilated microclimate, Bordeaux varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, and Petit Verdot have adapted exceptionally well to the region.

Among the most famous is Sassicaia from Tenuta San Guido (located in the eponymous area of the hamlet), based on Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc (the historic farm stands directly across from the Oratory of San Guido).

Vintage
An excellent vintage, perhaps slightly warmer than 2000. The color is a garnet ruby of good intensity; the aromas are ethereal and enveloping, with notes of red fruit in alcohol, tamarind, and hints of dried flowers. Tannins are more evident and a bit more bitter—a sign of evolution—with a warm finish of good length.

The Story

The history of Sassicaia is well known to all enthusiasts, but it is worth recalling a few key facts.

The first vintage released on the market was 1968. This was also the first with the label we recognize today, as Mario Incisa had already begun producing this unique wine at San Guido in the 1950s. Indeed, only a few friends of the estate were fortunate enough to taste the 1957, the 1967, or the legendary, distinct Sassicaia 1977.

Bolgheri Sassicaia is a DOC wine. Production is permitted within a specific area of the municipality, made with at least 80% Cabernet Sauvignon. Bolgheri Sassicaia is one of Italy’s most prestigious wines and is produced exclusively by the Tenuta San Guido estate, which owns all the vineyards within the area delimited by the DOC.
