THE WINERY – SAN MICHELE APPIANO

Grand and dignified, St. Michael-Eppan Winery has been enthroned in the center of South Tyrol’s most important wine-growing community for over a century. For more than two thousand years, wines have been grown in the area around Eppan, known for its ideal growing conditions, and it is these grapes that are being processed at St. Michael-Eppan Winery.

The 330 winemaking families that form the backbone of the winery joined forces in 1907 to create St. Michael-Eppan Winery. Their great passion is the wine with which they have been associated for generations. Offering knowledge, tradition and passion, each individual contributes to the fact that the winery is blessed with outstanding grapes, which are processed in the cellars with meticulous attention to detail and a great deal of skill.

It is in the cellars that the processing of the grapes comes to completion, and it is here that tradition meets innovative winemaking technology.
Respect for the grape is the top priority, too: nothing is more important than accepting the particularities of the individual vineyard sites and the different grape varieties.

Exceptional, fully ripe grapes are a prerequisite for high-quality wines, and they are pressed with meticulous attention paid to different vineyard sites and differences in quality. Only through individual vinification can the unique terroir be emphasized and highlighted. The wine grows towards full maturity in stainless steel tanks and oak barrels.

APPIUS

Since 1977 Hans Terzer has borne responsibility for wine production at St. Michael-Eppan Winery, bringing it to the top of the Italian and international wine world in just a few years. “I’ve had the idea of APPIUS in my head for a long time; I just had to wait for the right moment.”

“I wanted to harvest and develop these grapes separately, creating a completely new and sensational wine – a wine that we at St. Michael-Eppan had not created up until now.”

He seems to have succeeded in APPIUS. Sourced from various historical vineyards within the municipality of Eppan, the majority is Chardonnay; Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris and Sauvignon comprise the remainder. “APPIUS is basically fermented and aged in small oak barrels. After twelve months of aging in wood, it then matures on the lees for nearly three more years, inside steel tanks.

Every year, not only the content is reinterpreted but the design of the bottle also changes. The goal is to design a valuable wine collection that will delight wine aficionados around the globe every year. APPIUS is a limited edition

2017 Vintage

Through an extreme pre-selection of the grapes, combined with a careful maturation in the cellar and a successful assemblage, it has been possible to achieve a true sensory symphony despite climatically adverse conditions of the 2017 vintage. The contribution of each grape variety does not emerge individually, but forms a powerful symbiosis.

  • AT SIGHT: brilliant straw yellow
  • TO THE NOSE: intense and direct: aromatic herbs on one side and floral fragrances on the other. Secondary fruity aromas: white flesh fruit and exotic fruits.
  • ON THE PALATE: balanced and fresh with great minerality. Hazelnut and smoked vanilla notes. Long persistence.
