PRODUTTORI DEL BARBARESCO Riserva Montefico Barbaresco 2020
THE WINERY PRODUTTORI DEL BARBARESCO
Founded in 1958, it now has 50 members with approximately 110 hectares of Nebbiolo vineyards (1/7 of the original area) and controls many of the region’s historic “crus.” Produttori del Barbaresco vinifies only Nebbiolo grapes, producing a Barbaresco D.O.C.G. from various vineyards within the appellation, and a Langhe Nebbiolo D.O.C. using grapes from the same vineyards deemed less suitable for aging, resulting in a simpler, ready-to-drink wine.
In great vintages, 9 Barbarescos from specific vineyards are produced and marketed as Barbaresco Riserva: Asili, Rabajà, Rio Sordo, Ovello, Montestefano, Pajé, Muncagota, Montefico, Pora, areas long renowned for producing grapes of exceptional quality. Since the 2007 vintage, they have been officially recognized by the production regulations as “Additional Geographic Mentions.” The name of the Cru and the vineyard owners are shown on the numbered labels.
BARBARESCO Montefico
Vineyard: Montefico
PRODUTTORI DEL BARBARESCO Riserva Montefico Barbaresco 2020. The Barbaresco Riserva “Montefico” from the Produttori del Barbaresco winery is an elegant, intense, and structured red wine produced on the magnificent hills of Barbaresco, Piedmont. This label is crafted from 100% Nebbiolo grapes from the Montefico cru; a single vineyard located on a west/southwest-facing hill at an altitude of approximately 250 meters.
The Montefico cru is particularly appealing after some aging, when the wine still retains a fresh and fruity palate.
2020 VINTAGE
The 2020 vintage began with a mild winter and low precipitation, particularly regarding snowfall, presenting no significant challenges.
Temperatures
The early part of spring was relatively dry and sunny, ensuring uniform vegetative growth and budding during the first week of March.
March and April enjoyed fine weather and mild temperatures with little rainfall, initially suggesting an early vintage. However, this forecast changed in May, when unstable weather brought a considerable number of rainy days, a situation that lasted until late June.
This slowed vegetative development, offsetting the early spring advantage, while allowing for excellent water accumulation in the soil. Combined with moderate summer temperatures, this prevented water stress. Overall, the climate was favorable, despite some agronomic challenges in late spring due to early fungal attacks following the May and June rains.
The Nebbiolo reached the end of summer in optimal condition: moderate September night temperatures led to a rapid accumulation of polyphenols. Growth was steady rather than exponential, reaching technological maturity—optimal sugar content—between late September and early October. Regarding acidity, the Nebbiolo did not experience the typical decline seen in hot vintages with shorter cycles.
The harvest
Harvesting began in Barbaresco on September 30 and took place over two weeks, with a two-day break due to light rain on October 5.
