GIACOMO CONTERNO Barolo Francia 2021
GIACOMO CONTERNO Francia Barolo 2021
THE WINERY – GIACOMO CONTERNO
The winery was founded in 1900 in Monforte d’Alba by Giacomo, descendant of a family of winemakers active since the 1800s. His son Giovanni was the first to bottle Barolo Monfortino in 1912, masterfully crafted from selected local grapes. At the time, the wine, sold in barrels or demijohns, was rarely found in bottles.
In 1934, Giacomo produced Barolo Monfortino, named to honor the ancestral home in Monforte. In 1974, he purchased fourteen hectares of land in Serralunga d’Alba. These lands immediately proved to be particularly suited for the cultivation of Nebbiolo and Barbera grapes. From this point forward, Giacomo Conterno would no longer purchase grapes from local growers. Instead, the estate would focus exclusively on working its own vineyards.
The wine born from this exceptional terroir requires no forcing. Indeed, it is sufficient to enhance to the fullest what nature has provided. This is the philosophy of Cantina Giacomo Conterno, which is undoubtedly an ambassador of Italian excellence throughout the world.
The two Barolos – Cascina Francia and the Monfortino Riserva, released this year with the 2019 vintage – are legendary, highly expensive wines, but to touch the sky with a glass, the Barbera Cascina Francia is all you need.
BAROLO FRANCIA
Giacomo Conterno’s Barolo “Francia” is one of the ‘big‘ names, one of those before which you take off your hat and offer a round of applause. Finesse, complexity, austerity, depth, and elegance weave the texture of this red, destined by its very origin for nobility. Indeed, it is no coincidence that Barolo is known worldwide as ‘the King of wines and the wine of Kings’. Tasting expressions like Giacomo Conterno’s, one can only agree with those who coined this epithet.
The 2021 “Francia” from the Giacomo Conterno winery is a 100% Nebbiolo Barolo cru from Serralunga d’Alba, specifically from the Francia Vineyard, a limestone-clay soil that provides structure and character.
The 2021 vintage has been defined by many as a “perfect vintage”: a balance between phenolic ripeness, vibrant acidity, and ideal growing conditions, with cool nights and a well-calibrated summer season.
-Tasting notes-
- Color: ruby red, turning towards garnet tones.
- Nose: heralds a complexity waiting to be discovered: cherry, small berries, licorice, mentholated and toasted notes, and a hint of leather.
- Palate: on the palate, it asserts a decisive and powerful character, perfectly managed with an alluring charm. The finish is almost infinite, as is its aging potential. One simply needs to be guided into the depths of the glass.
