GIACOMO CONTERNO Cascina Francia Barbera d’Alba 2023

WINERY GIACOMO CONTERNO

The Winery was founded in 1900 in Monforte d’Alba by Giacomo, descendant of a family of winegrowers active since 1800. His son Giovanni was the first to bottle Barolo Monfortino in 1912, masterfully crafted from selected grapes from the area. At the time, wine, sold in barrels or demijohns, was rarely found in bottles.

In 1934, Giacomo produced Barolo Monfortino, named to honor the ancestral home in Monforte. In 1974, he purchased fourteen hectares of land in Serralunga d’Alba. These lands immediately proved to be particularly suited for the cultivation of Nebbiolo and Barbera grapes. From that moment on, Giacomo Conterno ceased purchasing grapes from local growers. Instead, the estate dedicated itself exclusively to working its own vineyards. Here, the vines are cultivated using traditional methods: careful pruning, thinning of excess clusters, and defoliation to allow sun and air to reach the grapes, with harvesting at the optimal time. In short, simple and ancient techniques essential for achieving wines of sublime quality.

The wine born from this exceptional terroir requires no forcing. Indeed, it is sufficient to enhance to the fullest what nature has provided. This is the philosophy of Cantina Giacomo Conterno, which is undoubtedly an ambassador of Italian excellence throughout the world.

Essential, profound, substantial.

Roberto Conterno is a Piedmontese man of few well-chosen words and solid production philosophy: good wine requires only maturity, time and racking.

The two Barolos — Cascina Francia and the Monfortino Riserva (the 2019 vintage was released this year) — are legendary, highly sought-after wines, but to touch the sky with a glass, the Barbera Cascina Francia is all you need.

CASCINA FRANCIA – BARBERA D’ALBA

Giacomo Conterno’s Barbera d’Alba Cascina Francia presents itself in the glass with a beautiful ruby red color; on the nose, red fruit dominates the scene, accompanied by red flowers and a mineral component. On the palate, it is a powerful, balanced wine with a delicate tannic structure and pleasant freshness.

The Barbera Francia Conterno is undoubtedly a heavyweight in its category, a fine Piedmontese wine to be experienced at all costs.
