Costa Russi GAJA 2003

Costa Russi GAJA 2003

The Gaja winery is as famous in the world as the history of the family itself, which has always represented the best of Italian wine and carries the flag of our Made in Italy high.

This winery in the Piedmontese Langhe is recognized all over the world for its notorious Barbaresco, a real status symbol like Château Lafite-Rothschild or Krug and Angelo Gaja is the undisputed king, revolutionizing winemaking in Italy and especially in Piemonte.

The Gaja family settled in Piedmont in the mid-seventeenth century.

Five generations have alternated in the production of wine since Giovanni Gaja, in 1859, founded the winery in Barbaresco, in the heart of the Langhe.

Angelo, son of Giovanni, represents the second generation. In 1905 he married Clotilde Rey, a tenacious and ambitious woman who exercised a strong influence on him, directing him towards productive choices inspired by total dedication to quality.

Giovanni Gaja, son of Clotilde and Angelo, who passed away in 2002, was an exquisite craftsman.

He made Barbaresco his flag wine gaining a leading position on the Italian market.

He introduced the philosophy – which we continue today – to bottle only the best vintages by selling the others in bulk; it also increased its own vineyards through the purchase of the Costa Russi, Sorì Tildin, Sorì San Lorenzo and Darmagi sites, thus consolidating a further improvement in production.

Aged 12 months in barriques; plus an additional year in large oak casks.

Of all Gaja single-vineyard wines, Costa Russi often shows the most captivating and refined nose.

Elegance and crystal purity characterize this extremely complex and densely woven wine with an aging potential of decades.

Tasting notes:

  • Dark ruby/purple.
  • A captivating and refined nose with well-integrated aromas of blackberries, violets and roasted coffee beans.

94/100
Wine Spectator

Plenty of fresh blackberry and cherry aromas follow through to a full-bodied palate, with fine tannins and a chewy finish. Well-structured for the vintage. Very fresh and lively. Best after 2008.

91/100
Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate

The 2003 Costa Russi is a noticeably bigger and more powerful wine than the Barbaresco. Although it is less expressive in its aromatics, it shows greater palate presence, with suggestions of super-ripe black cherries, tobacco and earthiness on a full-bodied frame with notable depth and a concentrated yet open-knit personality. It offers excellent balance, yet the hard tannins of the vintage are most penalizing in the Costa Russi and this wine comes across as somewhat heavy and ponderous in style, lacking the characteristic elegance of Gaja’s best wines. Anticipated maturity: 2009-2020.
