CIACCI PICCOLOMINI D’ARAGONA BRUNELLO DI MONTALCINO VIGNA DI PIANROSSO RISERVA SANTA CATERINA D’ORO 2012

The Brunello Riserva is a result of careful selections of the Pianrosso grape in the vineyards followed by a long maceration in our wine cellars

This wine is produced only in the best vintages from a careful selection of grapes from the Pianrosso vineyard

The estate has origins that date back to the 17th century and it still keeps its historical heritage in a building called “Palazzo” (Palace) that was built by Fabivs de’ Vecchis, Bishop of Montalcino and Abbot of Sant’Antimo Abbey.

After the Bishop’s death, the Palace and the surrounding estate were auctioned according to the Italian law regarding ecclesiastic properties and on September 16, 1868, they were purchased by the countess Eva Bernini Cerretani. On December 31, 1877, the countess Cerretani sold the entire estate to the Ciacci family from Castelnuovo dell’Abate. After the marriage between the count Alberto Piccolomini d’Aragona, a direct discendent of Enea Silvio Piccolomini (Pope Pius II) and Elda Ciacci, the Bishop’s Palace became the Ciacci Piccolomini d’Aragona Palace.

In 1985 the countess Elda Ciacci bequeathed the entire property to Giuseppe Bianchini, farmer of the estate since a lot of years, applying a completely brand new and forefront philosophy production for that period, increasing quantity, quality of wines and opening the export worldwide. Giuseppe, unfortunately passed away in February 2004, left the business to his son and daughter, Paolo and Lucia.

L’azienda

The Ciacci Piccolomini d’Aragona estate is located on the south eastslope of the municipality of Montalcino, close to the medieval village of Castelnuovo dell’Abate and to the famous Romanesque Abbey of Sant’Antimo, which dates back to the 11th century.
The entire estate, extending over 220 hectares of which 53 are in vines and 40 in olive groves, has all the typical characteristics of the Tuscan countryside adorned with rolling hills, pastures and woods with unforgettable colours.
Set between Arna hill and the Orcia River to the south-east, it offers a unique panorama with the beautiful contour of Mount Amiata in the background. Wild animals, scents of flowers and plants and the typical farmhouses dotted around, create a peaceful and calm atmosphere in this area.

Vigna Ferraiole, Vigna Egle, Vigna Contessa and Vigna Colombaio are just some of our most important Sangiovese Grosso’s vines; all of them located south Montalcino, facing south-west.
The soil is medium grain with good levels of marl, dating from the Eocene period.

The Sangiovese Grosso clone is selected from the eldest vines of the estate characterized by straggly bunches and big berries with thick skin. It is a particularly representative kind of Sangiovese coming from Montalcino area, which gives quality even in difficult vintages.

Awards:

94/100 Wine Spector:

“A wellspring of tobacco, underbrush, tea and mineral notes more than fruit at this point, this red acquiesces to its formidable structure now, yet it’s built for the long haul. There’s sweet fruit and intensity that should emerge over time. Best from 2015 through 2035. 830 cases made.” -B.

94/100 Robert Parker:

“The 2012 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Vigna di Pianrosso Santa Caterina d’Oro is impressive. Interestingly, it is quite a bit better than the regular Pianrosso. In this difficult vintage the decision to make a Riserva probably robbed the straight Pianrosso of some high quality fruit. Black cherries, flowers, licorice and mint are woven together in this powerful, structured Brunello while firm tannins frame the long, intense finish. I especially like the way the fruit continues to flesh out with additional time in the glass. This is a great showing and a terrific effort from Ciacci. Anticipated maturity: 2016-2026. “
