THE ESTATE – BIONDI SANTI 

The Biondi Santi winery, firmly guided for decades by Franco Biondi Santi, has become a symbol of Montalcino; and today, under the guidance of his son Jacopo, it is the undisputed point of reference for all Brunello enthusiasts. A centuries-old history, made up of passion, competence and love for the territory, which began in the mid-19th century thanks to the work and passion of Clemente Santi, a scholar and great landowner: in fact, the Tenuta Il Greppo was his.

The Biondi Santi wines received their first important awards at the 1867 Universal Exhibition in Paris, imposing themselves on the international wine scene for their multifaceted elegance. It was, however, the now historic 1888 vintage that produced what we know today as Brunello di Montalcino.

The heart of the Biondi Santi winery coincides with the historic Il Greppo Estate. We are at an altitude between 350 and 570 metres, in ideal conditions for the production of Brunello.

BRUNELLO DI MONTALCINO RISERVA

Produced for the first time in 1888, the Biondi-Santi Riserva was the first Brunello di Montalcino in history, and even today it is an extraordinary event when a new vintage of Riserva is announced at Tenuta Greppo, the Biondi-Santi main estate.

​Renowned for its extraordinary longevity, this rare wine has been released only 40 times from 1888 till today and each production is extremely limited. Riserva is traditionally produced with grapes coming from only the ùoldest vineyards, of more than 25 years of age.
At the centre of the cellar at Tenuta Greppo there is a dark room, hidden away from the world, dedicated specifically to Riserva.
It is “La Storica”, the estate wine library where Biondi-Santi carefully refines the bottles of each Riserva vintage ever produced.

“La Storica” is an intimate place where the bottles lie neatly stacked in small cells divided by vintage, naked, wearing only a drop of bees wax to seal the cork and minimize oxydization.

The Riserva will be removed from La Storica only at the moment that it is sold. It is then dressed with the original label from its vintage, including “la lunetta” ; the neck label which carries the number of each bottle, and the date of its departure from the cellar is hand written on the back label.

Vintage 2013

The 2013 Riserva speaks of the aromas of our land. On the nose it reveals a vast and intriguing bouquet reminiscent of the forest floor in autumn, of aromatic herbs, of porcini mushrooms and of sour cherries. At a young age the character of this Riserva is pleasantly austere, yet immediately refined, showing sublime equilibrium and elegance with reserved delicacy. On the palate its structure and complexity shine through as the tasting experience moves plastically along both the vertical and the horizontal axis in a crescendo of sensations; this sensation will continue to grow in time. Vintage 2013 is officially the 40th Riserva produced from 1888 until 2013. For the first time in history Biondi-Santi produced three large formats in addition to the 750 ml bottle: Magnum, Jéroboam and Mathusalem.
