Barolo GAJA Sperss 2015


Angelo Gaja is without a question one of the biggest names in Italian wine. Born in 1940, in 1961 he took over the family estate in the Langhe hills in the Piedmont region that was founded in 1859.Today, he oversees around 100 hectares of vineyards and does not buy any grapes externally. Gaja was a key contributor to the international reputation of some of the greatest Piedmont wines, with the Barbaresco and Barolo wines in particular.

He set himself apart from the competition thanks to new vinification and ageing techniques, which were deemed revolutionary at the time as it broke away from customary regional practices: selecting the very best plots, reducing yields, ageing in new French oak barrels instead of Yugoslavian oak casks.

Today, the best of his Barbaresco plots produce some of Italy’s best wines (Sori Tildin, Sori San Lorenzo and Costa Russi). He was also the first to plant Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc instead of Nebbiolo, going against the advice of his peers.


Barolo “Sperss” is a famous label by Gaja winery, produced since 1988 from Serralunga d’Alba vineyards. It is an intense, rich and very elegant red wine, with typical scents of violets, humus and wild berries and a balanced, structured, fresh, smooth and persistent: great class!

  • An intense ruby red colour.
  • The nose has pronounced notes and black fruits and white truffle.
  • On the palate, it is full-bodied, opulent and complex.

The vineyard is spread over 12 ha, with south-west facing vines at an altitude of 300m and soils of marl, clay and limestone. The wine is macerated then fermented for three weeks, before being raised for one year in oak barrels. It is then aged for a further 18 months in “botti grandi”, traditional, large oak barrels.
