MARCHESI ANTINORI Gran Selezione Badia a Passignano Chianti Classico 2022
THE FAMILY – MARCHESI ANTINORI
A passion passed down through 26 generations
The Antinori family has been dedicated to wine production for more than six hundred years: since 1385, when Giovanni di Piero Antinori became a member of the Arte Fiorentina dei Vinattieri. Throughout its long history, across 26 generations, the family has always directly managed this activity with innovative and sometimes courageous choices, while always maintaining unwavering respect for tradition and terroir.
Today the company is chaired by Albiera Antinori, with the support of her two sisters Allegra and Alessia, personally involved in the business activities. Their father, Marchese Piero Antinori, is currently the Honorary President of the company. Tradition, passion and intuition have been the driving qualities that have led the Marchesi Antinori to establish themselves as one of the leading Italian producers of high-quality wines.
Ancient Roots
Every vintage, every terroir, every idea is a new beginning, a new pursuit of ever higher quality standards. As Marchese Piero likes to say: “ancient roots play an important role in our philosophy, but they have never inhibited our innovative spirit.”
GRAN SELEZIONE BADIA A PASSIGNANO CHIANTI CLASSICO
Badia a Passignano
Badia a Passignano is located above Sambuca Val di Pesa, 3 km south of Tenuta Tignanello; its 223 hectares, 65 of which are planted with vines, extend over limestone soil, reaching an altitude of 250 to 300 m in one of the most beautiful and suitable areas of Chianti Classico. Its fundamental importance in the history of Chianti is recorded in hundreds of volumes, now kept in the State Archives of Florence, which provide information on the Sangiovese vineyards and the crops of the area. Confirming this, in 1983, a thousand-year-old vitis vinifera plant was found in the land surrounding Badia a Passignano.
Badia a Passignano Gran Selezione is produced exclusively from a selection of the best Sangiovese grapes from the estate of the same name located in the heart of Chianti Classico. The area has been renowned for wine production since the year 1000. The vineyards extend over soil rich in limestone rock with a medium amount of clay at an altitude of approximately 300 m a.s.l. Aging takes place in the historic 10th-century cellars of Badia a Passignano.
2022 VINTAGE
The 2022 vintage in Chianti Classico was characterized by lower-than-average rainfall until August and a generally warm spring and summer, with June and July marked by temperatures above the territory’s historical data; in these climatic conditions, the plants managed to self-regulate, ensuring uniform budding and flowering and facing the hottest months at their best, reaching the beginning of veraison in an optimal vegetative-productive state. The rains and consequent drop in temperatures in mid-August favored significant temperature excursions between day and night, allowing ripening to start optimally. The autumn months were ideal and guaranteed a high-quality harvest, which began in the last week of September and ended in the first week of October.
