VIGNETI MASSA Timorasso Derthona 2022
Timorasso Derthona represents one of the cornerstones of Walter Massa’s winemaking style, responsible for the revival of this grape variety, historically acclimated from the Tortona Hills to the outskirts of Turin since the 12th century, when it was known as “Grignolato.”
Walter Massa’s work on Timorasso began in 1987 in this splendid crossroads of Piedmont, Lombardy, Emilia, and Liguria, following a long career promoting Barbera.
After several study trips to some of the best Friulian white wine producers, Walter Massa returned to Piedmont, to his hometown of Monleale, with the goal of applying the method of aging on fine lees to Timorasso and beginning the process of producing a Piedmontese white wine intended for aging.
After many years, Walter Massa’s work seems to have borne fruit:
His wines reach remarkable levels of expression, attracting the attention of leading wine guides, but a large number of local producers are following his example, revitalizing the work of rediscovering the potential of Timorasso.
Derthona is a highly representative example of Timorasso’s most significant characteristics:
power, structure, mineral complexity, and other aromatic characteristics that suggest ample room for evolution over time for this ancient wine, brought back to life.
Aging:
A minimum of 6 months in bottle, but the longer it ages, the more its complexity is appreciated.
The wine is pure liquid chalk, limestone that invades the taste buds, followed by abundant and invigorating acidity.
A wine that bucks the trend of Massa’s richer wines.
This Timorasso is subtler than usual, juicier.
Taste
Warm sensations, with a good alcohol level balanced by a notable mineral freshness; long and persistent.
