CANTINA TERLANO

-History-

Sometimes renewal is needed to preserve tradition. That takes courage and the willingness to pull together. Fortunately, there was no lack of either when the Terlano Wine Growers’ Cooperative was established way back in 1893. What was a daring departure at the time has proved successful up to the present day. For wine lovers at least, Terlano wines have brought international fame to this small South Tyrolean village.

The foundation of the Cantina Terlano in 1893 took place at a time when agriculture was the mainstay of the regional economy. Apart from a few innovative winegrowers, however, who looked to the Rheingau region for new ideas and brought grape varieties from Germany and France to South Tyrol, agriculture under the domination of a few big landowners was backward.

The landlords were also the dominant factor in winemaking in the region. In order to liberate themselves from this domination, 24 Terlano winegrowers decided to join forces and founded the Cantina Terlano. Whereas red wines were more common in South Tyrol at the end of the 19th century, with a red to white ratio of 80:20, Terlano was already well known as a white wine area in 1893. Over the years this focus on white wines has been consolidated, and today the ratio of whites to reds at the Cantina Terlano is 70 percent white to 30 percent red.

TERLANER RARITY

“Cantina Terlano has an unusual offering in the form of its Rarities, special editions of mature white wines that have been left to age on the lees in steel pressure tanks for at least ten years. This Rarity is a Terlaner with a youthful freshness that belies its maturity. That makes it perfect for a long period of aging in the bottle.

Terlano has the terroir to produce great white wines, as its Rarities so convincingly demonstrate.

-Vinification-

Manual harvest and selection of the grapes; gentle whole cluster pressing and clarification of the must by natural sedimentation; slow fermentation at a controlled temperature in stainless steel tanks with malolactic fermentation and aging on the lees in big wooden barrels for 12 months; further aging on the lees in steel tanks without filtering or fining for 24 years.

“The climatic conditions we experienced in 2011 presented us with considerable challenges. That is because especially in the case of wines produced in years characterized by extreme weather conditions, the points in time of harvesting is of utmost importance and must be decided on by each vineyard individually.
After an extraordinarily warm and dry April and a summery May, there followed a June with average temperatures and considerable percipitation. The very mild spring resulted in sprouting about a week earlier than usual.
As a consequence of the ideal autumn weather, too, this vintage can be regarded as ‘good’ to ‘very good’,” according to enologist Rudi Kofler.

-Wine description-

  • Color: intensive light straw yellow with delicate greenish reflections
  • Smell: Terlano rarity wine has an impressive freshness and a wealth of aromas, with new components revealed at every tasting, including herbal notes of camomile, lemon balm and lovage together with a hint of dried kaki and apricot. The multifaceted bouquet also displays aromas of bread crust and yeast bun paired with flint.
  • Taste: The wine is smooth and creamy on the palate, with a strong acid backbone that leaves a both youthful and delicate impression and strikes a fine balance with the mineral components. The finish is elegant and silky, but also enormously deep and firm.
