PRUNOTTO Barbaresco 2020
PRUNOTTO Barbaresco 2020
THE WINERY – PRUNOTTO
Alfredo Prunotto founded his business in 1922 and was one of Piemonte’s most dynamic exporters until his retirement in 1956. The company passed then to Prunotto’s friend Beppe Colla, now a revered winemaker and one of the founding fathers of modern Piemonte. His defining moment was the decision in 1961 to bottle single vineyard (or Cru) wines from the finest sites; a practice that is now the norm in the region. Those wines were made from bought-in grapes, but in the 1990s the current owners (the Antinori’s of Tuscany), extended the Prunotto holdings including plots in the outstanding Bric Turot and Bussia vineyards.
Today, the estate totals 50 hectares of vineyards in the best wine-producing areas of the Piemonte and has a wine-producing facility equipped with the most modern technology available, making Prunotto one of the most important winemaking estates in the Piedmont region.
BARBARESCO
Prunotto’s Barbaresco is produced from vineyards in Treiso and Neive in the Barbaresco area, it’s the elegant expression of Nebbiolo. An aristocratic wine yet accessible and pleasant. It is aged in large oak barrels of varying capacities to enhance balance and softness on the palate.
Vintage
The 2020 winter season began with mild temperatures and limited precipitation without any particularly critical weather events. The first half of spring was relatively dry and sunny that led to early and even vegetative growth. The months of May and June brought a considerable number of rainy days that slowed down vine development, losing the head start achieved in spring. These climatic conditions provided beneficial groundwater reserves and, together with moderate summer temperatures, prevented water stress in the vineyards. Regular cluster thinning adjusted the crop load per vine to encourage the accumulation of optimal sugar levels. Excellent climatic conditions persisted throughout September with significant fluctuations between day and night temperatures that guaranteed an ideal ripening phase. Harvesting began on September 27th and was completed on October 6th.
Vinification
Immediately upon arrival in the cellar, grapes were destemmed and crushed. Maceration on the skins took place over a period of approximately 10 days at a temperature that did not exceed 30 °C (86 °F). Malolactic fermentation was completed before winter. The wine was aged in oak barrels of varying capacities for about 12 months. Bric Turot was then aged in the bottle for a year before being released.
-Tasting notes-
Barbaresco 2020 is an intense garnet red color. Complex on the nose, it offers aromas of wild berries, spices and aromatic herbs. The palate is velvety, harmonious, and elegant with a lingering persistent finish.
