Brunello di Montalcino Pietroso 2014
The Winery
The farm ‘Pietroso’ started in Montalcino in the 1970s thanks to the passion of winemaker Domenico Berni.
His aim was to produce a limited quantity of fine wines such as Brunello and Rosso di Montalcino.
Today the business is run by family member Gianni Pignattai, Alex Dondi, the enologist and Federico Becarelli, an agronomist.
The farm covers 13 hectares, 5 are cultivated with vines for the production of Brunello di Montalcino and there is one hectare of olive trees.
The Vineyards
- vineyards are planted exclusively with the Sangiovese grape and are situated in three distinctive areas within the boundaries of Montalcino which allows for a balanced product even in years when there are particular weather conditions
The density of planting is 4500 vines per hectare and the growing system is branched cordons with reduced budding to contain the yield to about 70 quintals per hectare.
- grapes are picked entirely by hand after drastically thinning out the bunches over the summer.
- winery is situated at about 500 metres from the centre of Montalcino and has splendid views over the old town
Here all the vinification, ageing and bottling processes take place.

The Winecellar
The vinification cellar is a well insulated modern building situated underground and hidden by a natural terrace. Vinification takes place in stainless steel containers of 60 Hl.
The cellar used for the ageing process is built of natural stone walls and is air conditioned.
Brunello di Montalcino is the most important wine produced by the winery.
It is made using 100% Sangiovese grapes which are cultivated with great care and attention.
After a long fermentation on the skins the wine is matured for three years in Siavonic oak barrels of about 30hl and it is kept for at least a further 6 months in bottles before being sold.
The wine is clear, of a ruby to granate colour, it has an intense but characteristic nose of red fruits and a hint of vanilla.
The tannin levels are good and the wine has a fine structure.
