MASCARELLO GIUSEPPE E FIGLIO

Giuseppe Mascarello & Figlio surely ranks as one of Barolo’s finest producers. The family business dates back to 1881. All the wines are traditionally made using a combination of epoxy-lined cement and stainless-steel cuves, before being aged in large Slavonian botte; capturing the vineyards’ full expression.

Sandy soils in Castiglione Falletto give a charming, forward style of Barolo. The maceration time is shorter than for other wine, and it is made to drink young, on the fruit. Certainly there is no shortage of that here: it is packed with raspberry, cranberry and redcurrants combined with hay and the rose notes that make Barolo famous, and lively acidity and balancing tannins emerge as it moves to a fresh finish.

BAROLO VILLERO

Vineyard: Villero in the village of Castiglione Falletto (CN)
Grape Harvest: Towards the middle of October.

-Wine-making process-

Estate-grown bunches, thinned during the summer, undergo traditional-style, floating cap fermentation for 15/20 days. The wine is then matured in medium-sized Slavonian oak barrels for around 30 months.

Expected cellar life: 10/25 years
Bottling: After four years following the vintage
Serving temperature: approx. 18°
Storage: Lying down in cool, dark surroundings
Pairings: Red meats in general, game, mature cheeses.

-Tasting notes-

  • Colour: garnet red with orange-coloured highlights;
  • Nose: very fruity, elegant, intense;
  • Taste: excellent body with power and stuffing, full, well-balanced.
