BAROLO 2018 BRICCO BOSCHIS CAVALLOTTO
The history
One family, one cellar, one unique hill: the Bricco Boschis and the Cavallotto Winery; a family of grape-growers for generations.
This is a place rich in history where the vines found their ideal home, in a superb microclimate and with geologic structures that contain an ideal mix of calcareous marl and sand.
In 1989 the family acquired 60% of the historic Vignolo Cru and were the first to bottle this cru on its own as the Cavallotto Barolo Riserva Vignolo.
Since 1995, the vineyard plots of Colle Sudovest and Punta Marcello were reborn as a “normal” Barolo with the name of Cru Bricco Boschis.
Since the end of the 1980’s, Olivio’s children Alfio, Giuseppe and Laura have continued the work of gradual growth and constant quality improvements begun by their father and uncle.
The cellars were also expanded: in 1994, a new barrel aging cellar was excavated into the Bricco Boschis hill and was attached to the existing bottling and aging areas, and in 2008 the bottle aging cellar was expanded.
Tasting Notes
The character of the 2018 vintage shows cleanly through in the elegant, restrained Barolo Bricco Boschis.
The nose shows characteristic aromas of red and black cherries, with summer herbs, anise and penetrating floral notes.
In the mouth, the nuanced flavors of cherries, raspberries and hints of eucalyptus are wrapped around a balanced yet subtle tannic structure.
The finish is long and focused, with mineral and berry flavors.
The warm but not overly hot growing conditions gave us excellent fruit-acid integrating and they are in harmony with the tannins and alcohol.
This is a gentler, less austere iteration of the Bricco Boschis Barolo that will need about a decade to reach its drinking window
Pairings
This wine finds its best matches at the table, with first courses of prosciutto, salami, Alba beef tartare and vitello tonnato.
The wine is best with second courses of red meat in general, but also grilled fish or white meats, or with hard and aged cheeses.
Desserts with dark chocolate are also a good match, or it can be enjoyed as a “vino da meditazione” (a wine for meditation) by itself.
