ALDO CONTERNO Barolo Riserva Granbussia 2016
ALDO CONTERNO
In the 19th century, Aldo Conterno’s ancestors emigrated to Argentina, only to return to Italy some years later due to family circumstances.
It was then that Giovanni Conterno, along with his family, returned to Monforte d’Alba to join his father, Giuseppe, at the family’s small winery, assisting him in the production of local wine.
Following his return, the Conterno winery increased its wine production. The wine was sold in casks—not only within Italy but also as far away as the Americas—thanks to a relative who had remained in Argentina.
Responding to market demand, the Conterno family recognized the need to create an exceptional Barolo—produced only in the best vintages—using long fermentation processes that would allow the wine to age well over time.
Consequently, in 1920, they began bottling a Barolo Riserva.
ALDO CONTERNO Barolo Riserva Granbussia 2016. In the late 1930s, Giovanni handed over the reins of the business to his son, Giacomo. Continuing his father’s tradition with great seriousness and foresight, Giacomo personally visited his clients; as the prestige of Barolo grew, he successfully established the family brand across many regions of Italy.
It was during this period that his sons, Giovanni and Aldo, began working alongside him, learning the ropes of managing the business.
In 1950, Aldo decided to set off for America, harboring a dream of establishing his own winery with the help of an uncle who was already living in California. His time in the United States was a formative and unforgettable experience; however, due to certain circumstances, he eventually had to leave, deciding to return to Italy to join his father’s business.
By 1961, when Giacomo handed the company over to his sons, the winery had already become a prestigious establishment, recognized throughout much of Italy.
Yet, the five years Aldo had spent in the United States left him with an enduring desire to establish a business of his own.
Thus, after a long period of working alongside his brother, Aldo decided to pursue the dream he had begun in America—purchasing the “FAVOT” estate and founding “PODERI ALDO CONTERNO” in 1969.
Today, the winery is managed by Aldo’s three sons—Franco, Stefano, and Giacomo—who are following in their father’s footsteps and continuing the family tradition.
