TENUTE DELL’ORNELLAIA Le Serre Nuove 2023
Philosophy
The company’s production philosophy focuses on a single objective: quality. Every choice is therefore of the utmost importance and requires absolute attention to detail. No shortcuts are allowed at any stage of the production process: this is the way we work, and this is how Ornellaia manages to obtain the best grapes based on the climatic conditions of each vintage.
During the harvest, analysis and empirical testing allow us to carefully select the grapes to be harvested. Grape tasting allows us to better evaluate the ripeness of the tannins and the balance of the bunches, enabling us to determine the best time for harvest and the best winemaking technique for the grapes from each plot. We subject the grapes to a double selection process: an initial sorting table to verify quality, followed by a second inspection to remove any residual vegetation.
The grapes from each cru ferment separately, as each base wine contributes to the final blend, based on the specific conditions of its vineyard: the combination of soil, climate exposure, and, of course, the grape variety. Only after a year of barrel aging are the base wines assembled, respecting two main criteria: the expression of elegance inherent in the spirit of Ornellaia and the style of the vintage.
Ornellaia’s commitment is to continue the legend without resting on its laurels, always imagining the best possible combination of technical expertise and fine craftsmanship.
THE FRESCOBALDI FAMILY
For 700 years, the Frescobaldi family has combined tradition, experience, and innovation with creativity and the pursuit of excellence. The family has always sought to develop and celebrate the diversity of the Tuscan terroir. As proud owners of some of the region’s finest vineyards, they have always sought to maintain the identity and autonomy of each property.
ORNELLAIA, known as one of the world’s most iconic wineries, reached the height of its development under the ownership of the Frescobaldi family.
Ornellaia is one of the family’s estates, along with ATTEMS (Friuli) MASSETO, DANZANTE, LUCE DELLA VITE, and the six FRESCOBALDI estates: Nipozzano, CastelGiocondo, Pomino, Ammiraglia, Castiglioni, and Remole.
Le Serre Nuove dell’Ornellaia – BOLGHERI DOC ROSSO
Produced with the same passion and attention to detail as Ornellaia, Le Serre Nuove dell’Ornellaia is a true “second vin.” A blend of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot, it combines immediate pleasure and complexity on the palate and nose with proven aging potential.
2023 Vintage
44% Merlot, 37% Cabernet Sauvignon, 11% Cabernet Franc, 8% Petit Verdot
2023 was a challenging vintage in Bolgheri, yet it benefited from nature’s benevolence at crucial moments in the growing season.
The winter was mild, with relatively high temperatures and normal rainfall, which favored early vine growth.
Spring brought abundant rainfall, which helped replenish water reserves for summer, but required meticulous work in the vineyard.
The hot summer saw high temperatures, though not extreme, accompanied by rainfall that mitigated water stress in the vineyards. This allowed for gradual and regular ripening of the grapes, which achieved high concentration. The late August rains and cool September nights favored the development of aromatic complexity and preserved the wine’s acidity, ensuring a perfect balance between power and elegance.
VINIFICATION AND AGEING – 2023
The grapes were harvested by hand in 15-kg crates, and the bunches were selected on a double sorting table before and after destemming, finally undergoing a soft pressing.
Since 2016, in addition to manual selection, optical sorting has been introduced to further enhance the quality of the selection. Each variety and each parcel was vinified separately. Alcoholic fermentation took place partly in stainless steel vats and partly in concrete vats, at temperatures between 22-28°C for two weeks, followed by maceration for approximately 10-15 days.
Malolactic fermentation took place in stainless steel tanks, and the wines were then transferred to barriques (25% new and 75% used).
The wine remained in barriques in Ornellaia’s temperature-controlled cellar for approximately 15 months. After the first 12 months, the wine was assembled and then returned to the barriques for an additional 3 months. The wine remained in bottle for six months before being released.
