 1920s
The Vacca family has been living and working the vines at Cantina del Pino, one of the oldest estates in Barbaresco, since the 1920s when Giuseppe Vacca, bought the property from his friend, the legendary agronomist and director of the Royal Enological School in Alba, Domizio Cavazza. On the day his son Luigi was born, Cavazza planted a pine tree in the backyard of the property to mark the highest point of the Ovello hill, the area where his estate was situated.
To pay homage to the special friendship between Giuseppe and Domizio, the property, locally known as Cascina Casotto, has been named after the pine tree which is also the symbol of the wine made here at Cantina del Pino.
Branching out from the legendary Produttori del Barbaresco Cooperative in 1997, Cantina del Pino approach to wine making is rooted in a deep appreciation for the land manifested in gentle processes that allow the particularities of the soil to become tangible in the wines they are making.
2020s
Renato and Franca, a wine maker and a classically trained musician and architect who speak Piedmontese as their first language, are now running Cantina del Pino where they work and live alongside Renato’s parents and a small team of passionate people from the region. The family’s vineyards are concentrated around the Ovello hill. The site is known for its combination of cooler microclimate and unique soils blending limestone with sandy veins and a high calcium content, the perfect conditions for an elegant, age-worthy Barbaresco.
After studying wine making at the Royal Enological School in Alba, and spending five years with Produttori del Barbaresco, Renato felt the need to test his own ideas and methods around the vineyard from both an agricultural and a winemaking perspective, that’s why in 1997 he convinced his father to start their own label.
In 2013 Franca joined the business and since then Cantina del Pino has taken a (contemporary) turn that reflects their gratitude for the immense privilege of transforming the grapes of Barbaresco into wine.
Believing that a good wine dwells in the quality of the vines and of the soil they are meticulously studying and working their vineyards, combining the family’s vast knowledge of grape growing with recent agricultural research and a special care for nature and the earth. Their passion and hard work has been celebrated across the world.
GALLINA BARBARESCO
The vineyards of the “Gallina“ cru are located at an altitude between 200 and 250 meters above sea level; interventions are carried out only when necessary.
The Barbaresco “Gallina“ by Cantina del Pino ferments for about 7 days in stainless steel tanks at a controlled temperature, after which the malolactic fermentation takes place in the same tanks.
At the end, it ages for 24 months in Slavonian oak barrels and for 12 months in the bottle.
CHARACTERISTICS
- Color: garnet red.
- Aroma: exciting notes of cherry, plum and berries are softened by mineral sensations, pepper, cinnamon, chocolate and tobacco.
- Taste: On the palate it is a full-bodied and graceful red, full of fruity scents and well-polished in the tannic texture, a soft and delicious Barbaresco of astonishing balance, with a long and velvety aftertaste.
