CANTINA TERLANO Pinot Grigio Tradition 2024

WINERY – CANTINA TERLANO

Founded in 1893, the Cantina Terlano winery is now one of the leading wine growers’ cooperatives in South Tyrol, with a current membership of 143 growers working a total area of 190 hectares. That is the equivalent of some 1.5 million bottles of wine a year. We and our members have long had a strong focus on quality. That has attracted praise and recognition on the Italian and international wine markets, and in spite of its relatively small size, Cantina Terlano is now well established in the world of wine.

Organizational structure

Cantina Terlano is a cooperative, with Georg Eyrl as Chairman and Hansjörg Hafner as his deputy. The Board, which was elected for three years at the end of 2020, has the following members: Anton Adami, Norbert Elsler, Ulrike Gratl, Hans-Peter Höller, Stefan Sandrini, Robert Müller, Christoph Patauner, Elmar Pichler, Konrad Rauch, Manfred Runer and Georg Spitaler.

PINOT GRIGIO TRADITION

Vintage wines made from typical traditional varieties of Alto Adige grapes, with multilayered aromas, structure, complexity  and density.

PINOT GRIGIO

“An extremely elegant wine is the Pinot Grigio with its multifaceted fruity bouquet. It convinces with its mild, round finish and balanced acidity.”

Rudi Kofler

Vinification

Manual harvest and selection of the grapes; gentle pressing and clarification of the must by natural sedimentation; slow fermentation at a controlled temperature in stainless steel tanks, aging on the lees in steel tanks for 5-7 months.

Vintage 2024

The 2024 wine-growing year began with an exceptionally wet spring – the wettest since 1965. The cool and humid weather conditions persisted until May and early June. The result was delayed flowering and, in the case of some grape varieties, coulure, i.e. clusters with reduced numbers of developing grapes. This translated into reductions in yield of between 15 and 40 percent, with the Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Blanc and Lagrein particularly affected.

July was a month of frequent thunderstorms, while the weather in August was dry and warm. These conditions lasted until the beginning of September, but temperatures then dropped significantly around the middle of the month. This considerably slowed grape ripening and made it challenging for the late-ripening red varieties to reach full maturity.

In such a demanding year, prime exposed sites have proven to be particularly advantageous. The weather conditions required a lot of work, commitment and expertise on the part of our winegrowers. But their dedication has paid off:

The 2024 vintage is looking promising! In particular, the white wines and Pinot Noirs are already making a very positive impression.

Wine description

  • Color: Intensive straw yellow.
  • Smell: Our Pinot Grigio pairs stimulating fruit – reminiscent of Williams pear, lychee and white melon – with the floral aromatic character of a freshly mown meadow.
  • Taste: With its finely balanced components – from aromas of black tea to exotic fruity nuances of melon and ripe grapefruit – this is a superbly full and at the same time mellow wine.
