THE WINERY – ANSITZ WALDGRIES
700 years of Viticulture
Cited in an ancient archive document dating back to 1242, the old Ansitz Waldgries manor house in the centre of Santa Maddalena/St. Magdalena is one of the oldest wine estates in the region.
Winemaking has been ongoing at the Waldgries Estate for about 7 centuries. A sizeable collection of tools and implements has been amassed over the years, testifying to the long history of the estate. Roblinus de’ Waldgries was the first owner of Waldgries. Heinrich Plattner acquired the estate in 1930, and his grandson, Christian Plattner, is a keen standard-bearer of the family tradition.
Today „Roblinus“ is the name of the most exclusive wine from Christian Plattner: Lagrein Roblinus.

“Even as a child, my idea was that on our land, the soil could produce almost anything and
everything”.

The terroir
In the Santa Maddalena area north of Bolzano/Bozen, the hills and steep slopes are amongst the most fertile in South Tyrol, with a geomorphology that remained unchanged since prehistoric times.
On the wine estate the micro-climate is benign, providing ideal conditions for the vines that thrive on the morainic soils comprised of porphyry and dolomite rock.
