LIVIO FELLUGA – HISTORY

It is obvious that the story of Livio Felluga and his wines is bound up with the history of this very special land in the north east corner of the Adriatic, where the Mediterranean meets central Europe.

It is the story of a family that endured two world wars, living first in the Austro-Hungarian Empire and then in the young Kingdom of Italy, on the rocky coast of the Istrian peninsula and the lagoon of Grado, before finally settling in the gently rolling hills of Friuli.

The return to Italy was far from easy for veterans of the Second World War, especially for those who had left their families in this long-suffering corner of the Adriatic.
The survivors came back to find it was no longer a proud bridgehead into Europe. The physical, political and ethnic frontiers had changed irremediably, as had the agricultural and social panorama of the hill country itself.
The rural population was moving away, leaving the land the poorer, and abandoning the crops, values and traditions that are indivisible from the soil.

Livio Felluga had to face another battle to revive the hills, convinced that only high-quality viticulture could breathe new life into the Friulian countryside.
With great courage, he began to restore old vineyards and plant new ones, introducing innovative ideas and techniques.

It was hard work, but Livio Felluga set to it with the tenacity and passion that would help him in the coming years to create one of Friuli’s most impressive wineries, earning his universally acknowledged reputation as the man who re-established Friuli’s winemaking heritage.

The patriarch Livio Felluga passed away in December 2016 at the age of 102.

ROSAZZO DOCG – ABBAZIA DI ROSAZZO

In the late 1950s, Livio Felluga set out on his journey through the hills of Rosazzo. It was love at first sight for this was the ideal place to make his wines. Eagerly, Livio purchased his first plots and got down to work, determined to bring new life to the hills. Emblematic of the area is the Abbazia di Rosazzo (“Abbey of Rosazzo” in Italian), which for centuries has embodied Friuli’s wine history and culture.

It was an important point of reference for Livio Felluga, who regarded the Abbey with immense admiration and respect. These were the years of Livio’s deep friendship with Luigi Nadalutti, known as Fr Vigion to those close to him, who for many years watched Livio’s wine activities prosper. Meanwhile Livio dreamed of looking after the Abbey’s vineyards, a dream that was shattered by the 1976 earthquake and the passing of Fr Vigion.

Then came the years of reconstruction. The vineyards were entrusted to the care of others but Livio lived in hope.
Much time has passed and now the dream has at last come true. Today, management of the cellars and vineyards is firmly in Livio Felluga’s skilled hands.

The creation of “Abbazia di Rosazzo 2009 ” is a token of Livio’s enduring love for Rosazzo and its Abbey. Only the finest grapes were selected to create this ultra-refined white wine, a wine of significance for what it is and for what it represents.

Vinification

The grapes are carefully destemmed and left to cold macerate. Next, the fruit is soft crushed. The must is then cleared by allowing it to settle and then fermented in stainless steel tanks with yeasts selected in Friuli. After three days, the wine is racked into oak casks where the alcoholic and malolactic fermentation is completed.

Ageing

The wine matures in oak casks where yeast lysis took place. In July 2016 the wine was bottled. Tertiary aromas will develop over the years to come.

Sensory characteristics

  • Appearance: a luminous yellow of good depth
  • Nose: Penetrating, intense, multi-layered. Exceptional elegance, fruit and floral presence: lantana, jasmine, wisteria, acacia and orange blossom, hawthorn combine with apricot, peach, melon and grapefruit. Refined creamy notes of vanilla, custard, sweet almond and hazelnut are enriched by balsamic sensations of thyme, nettle, mint leaves and mallow.
  • Palate: Complex and elegant. Soft attack with a lively acidic note. Richness of sensations in the palate and great consistency with the nose: Granny Smith apple, yellow peach, papaya, white flowers, citrus and balsamic hints. The tannic structure well supports the minerality. Full finish with great persistence

Serving suggestions

Shellfish, oysters, caviar, mussels, seaweeds and other salty flavors; it’s a particularly good match with vegetables and light meats with delicate and rich dressings.
